Hi! I’m Vanessa. I’m a 29 year old queer feminist writer and photographer based in Portland, OR. I write about hiking, travel, queer community, and My Feelings.
Many of my readers discovered this blog when I attempted to thru-hike the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) earlier this year. (Hello, hiking enthusiasts and all of my mom’s friends! Thanks for reading!) For those who don’t know, the PCT is a 2,650 mile “wild and scenic pathway” that stretches from Mexico to Canada, passing through California, Oregon, and Washington. I planned to hike the entire trail, but ended up only hiking 454 miles of the Southern California portion. You can read detailed daily posts from my PCT hike here, and you can read an essay I wrote for SHAPE magazine about how it felt to be the fat girl on the trail and how that contributed to my decision to quit earlier than expected. I have more thoughts and feelings about why hiking the PCT was not the right adventure for me (at least not this year) and I’ll hopefully be writing more about that soon. Stay tuned.
I’m currently hosting a fundraiser to benefit Big City Mountaineers. If you enjoy my writing and would like to thank me in some way, the best thing you can do is donate to this fundraiser! It would mean so much to me; thank you.
When I’m not adventuring you can find me writing, crafting, cooking, and talking about astrology. My words have been published in various places on the internet; if you’d like to read more of my work you can find it most recently at SHAPE, Nylon, and Autostraddle. I am also the current community editor at Autostraddle.
My favorite color is pink, I like the knife emoji best, and I think you’re doing a great job.
